Day 21; My dream vacation.
I've been lucky enough to visit some pretty amazing places, Greece, Italy, Paris...but the once place I cannot wait to visit is Australia. Just take a look at these phenomenal pictures. Where do you dream of going?
I've been lucky enough to visit some pretty amazing places, Greece, Italy, Paris...but the once place I cannot wait to visit is Australia. Just take a look at these phenomenal pictures. Where do you dream of going?
one day I'll be there!
Day 20: My biggest fear.
Failure. Need I say more? I think this goes hand-in-hand with my best piece of advice, but I am so afraid to fail. I've worked hard my whole life and I'm scared to see that all blow up in my face, or even worse, just result in nothing. So every day I fight a little harder & I work a little harder to ensure that when I fail, I know why & and I know how to fix it. Because, let's be real, failure is inevitable, it's how we deal with the failure that makes us stronger and makes us better.
Day 19: What makes me happy.
1. The Broncos.
2. My steaming cup of coffee in the morning.
3. Friday date nights with Adam
4. Laying in bed with the fireplace on.
5. Denver.
6. This verse, 2 Corinthians 12:8-9, "Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness so that Christ's power may rest on me."
7. Red wine, white wine, champagne, I don't discriminate.
8. Cooking.
9. Planning our wedding.
10. Finding new songs.
11. Pure Barre.
12. Texting.
13. Real Simple, the magazine.
14. My kindle
15. My DVR.
16. Painting my nails
17. My sister, Erin. (you can read more about her, here.)
18. Blogging.
19. These people, I'm the luckiest and happiest lady in the world because of them.
1. Isablel, my beautiful niece. 2. My sister-in-laws & the fact that I'm an Aunt! 3. My Omaha loves. 4. My beautiful and supportive family & graduating law school. 5. My crazy little family, Adam & Henry. 6. My new family. 7. My gorgeous best friends & maids of honor. 8. 223. 9. Tomás' my littlest love and dreamboat.
Day 17: I'm an expert at....
- Instagram. No, but really. I'm really good at posting pictures, hashtags, tagging people and making sure I post at least once a week.
- Tetris. I know what you're thinking, isn't everyone good at tetris? While that might be true, I'm an expert, I could play for hours...which explains some of my grades in college.
- Facebook stalking. I don't know if this is something to be proud of, but if you wanna know something, just ask me, and I promise you I will get to the bottom of it.
- Wearing black every day.
- Taking at least 12 pictures of Henry a week.
- Organization. Trust me, I have two planners, I use my phone and my gmail calendar. If you want to know when someone's birthday/anniversary/moving day is... I'm your gal.
- Online shopping. Oh man, this one gets me in big trouble. It has to be all those pesky emails I get 5 times a day from J. Crew.
- Singing in my car and in my shower where no one can hear me. I swear, Whitney Houston would be jealous of my car singing. but only when I'm alone. For some reason when other people are around I instantly become tone-deaf... it's the strangest thing.
- Going through airport security at a rapid pace, even when I'm alone, with Henry and have 3 bags. It's really quite incredible. People have complimented me.
- Movie quotes and lines from TV shows. I share this expertise with my brother. Maybe it's genetic. But quiz me, I can tell you any line from Friends, Boy Meets World, and most movies. I just wish this talen paid.
- Road Rage. Those of you who've been in a car can attest to this one.
- Making to-do lists. I love checking things off. Check! (anyone catch the friends reference? see, I told you, tv quotes!)
Day 15. Favorite quote and why.
I have two, is that allowed? Hell, it's my blog and I'll do what I want. I have a list of favorite quotes that changes often. I have always loved quotes. If you can believe it, I have a journal full of only quotes. I have multiple word documents on my computer full of quotes from TV shows, different poets, different books, movies, ect. I find quotes inspiring. This first one is from EE Cummings. He has written a ton of my favorite poems and this is by far my favorite. I love it so much I even have a painting of it in my bedroom. I wish I could tell you exactly why I love, but it just makes me feel good and safe. Enjoy people.
i carry your heart with me (i carry it inmy heart) i am never without it (anywherei go you go, my dear; and whatever is doneby only me is your doing, my darling) i fear no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i wantno world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meantand whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows(here is the root of the root and the bud of the budand the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which growshigher than soul can hope or mind can hide)and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
-E.E. CummingsQuote number two. I explained what this quote means to me, here. This quote has been a quote that I've carried with me for a long time. It's sent me on certain paths and kept me off others. It's how I've tried to live my life and will continue to live my life. I love it.
Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.
Day 13: Favorite Fall Recipe
Today's prompt is perfect for me because (1) I made a delicious soup last night and (2) I love everything fall! I didn't grow up where fall exists, and I have to be honest, living in a city with full-fledged fall is incredible. Watching TV with a fire on, feeling the crisp cool air on my morning walk with Henry and crunching leaves beneath my boots is just the best. And, don't even get me started on the purple, orange, yellow and red leaves that grace all of our streets. Man, I could go on and on about fall, but after much ado, the recipe for Gumbo. I got this recipe from my new favorite book, Paleo Comfort Foods and we modified it a bit to our liking. Enjoy!

Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 onions, chopped
- 3 stalks celery, chopped
- 2 green peppers, chopped (I used dried again!)
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 quart can tomatoes (I used on of those big cans of diced tomatoes, and one small one because it looked like it needed more juice)
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 pound shrimp (I used frozen from the grocery store)
- 1 pound andouille sausage, sliced
- Cajun seasoning
- 2 bay leaves
- Get a crockpot, turn it on high.
- Throw in the onions, celery, peppers, garlic, tomatoes, chicken broth, bay leaves shrimp and sausage.
- Season with cajun seasoning. This was our addition. Season to your liking. (We use about 2 tablespoons. Let it cook for a couple hours and then tasted and added some more)
- Put the lid on and let it sit. We cooked it for 3 hours on low, and then turned in up to high for the last hour.
I wish there were more pictures than this, but literally put it all in at once.
yum, yum, yum
Day 11. If you were president...
Can I be real for a second? I would never want to be president. Is that a copout? Sure, being president would be cool for like 10 minutes. You get to live in the White House, get paid pretty good money and people see you on TV every day. I like the idea that I would get to stand up for people, ideas and my country. I love America. But lately, it seems like standing up for those ideas is not what being President is about. It's about a whole mess of other things and since I don't like being political on my blog, I'm not going to be. In reality, I'm probably too strong willed, opinionated and definitely too emotional to be president. Plus, I really don't like being hated for what I believe in. And, have you seen the grey hair that Obama has? No thanks. I'll stick to my blonde hair, semi-stress free life and maybe one day I'll share those opinions, beliefs and ideas on Fox News. Just you wait. For now, we'll leave it up to the Kid President, he seems to have this whole thing handled. And he gives the world hugs. I'd vote for him.
Day 10. I never thought blogging would...
Be my form of therapy. Be the thing that calms me down at the end of a long day. Make me feel safe and connected to those I love. Make people happy. Make people smile. Encourage people. I never thought blogging would be my most favorite thing, my secret (public) place that divulges my secrets and shares my feelings. I never thought blogging would make me this happy.
Keep a daily diary of your dreams, goals and accomplishments, if you're life is worth living, it's worth recording
Day 9. Best or Worst Halloween Memory #TBT
I think I'm going to let the pictures speak for themselves & all you readers out in blogger-world can decide what you think is my best and worst halloween memory. Happy #TBT people.
If this little babe could vote, I would say this is the worst.
I was 6....6 years old people. We're all lucky I turned out as good as I did.
I scare myself.
Where does one find green lipstick?
Day 8. Letter To Yourself in 10 Years.
I'm not good at writing posts to a future self. I pride myself on being a planner in all things, but also taking things as they come and living each day...by day. This sort of turned into a 'hopes' letter to myself. It's encouraging and it's challenging, and its hopeful.

"Oh hey, Kristen Kavan! I hope you know that sounds as good now, as it did May 9, 2015. How is it possible that it's 2024?! Geeze, what's it like there? Are your cars flying yet, because people have been saying they would be already. It's hard to believe you've been married for 9+ years. Hows that going? I hope you're still blissfully in love with a multitude of beautiful kids.
I hope you're still doing what you wanted to do when you were a wide-eyed lawyer fresh out of law school. I hope you're taking risks and still not afraid to say what's on your heart. I hope you're a professional blogger, writing blogs you love, maybe with a little Food Network sponsor mixed in there. I hope, regardless of what you're doing, that you're doing what you love. I hope you finally learned Spanish like you've always wanted. I hope you don't regret a thing, instead I hope you look back at those life lessons and smile and then maybe teach them as lessons to your kids. I hope you love yourself and who you've become. I hope Henry is still alive. I hope you're not afraid. I hope you're hopeful and still ambitious and still curious.
I hope you're happy. I hope you're not jaded. I hope you still believe in good, and I hope you're doing good. I hope you've held your friends close, and your family even closer. How are Isabel and Tomás? They're 12 and 10?? Is that real? I hope your life is all you dreamed it to be. Don't be afraid to keep dreaming bigger, loving more, hugging tighter and working harder. Make sure you're not missing out. Seize the day. What do you care about? Who do you care about? Pursue that. Forget the rest. Keep fighting for those who can't. Keep your head up. Help others. Keep going. Be kind always. Keep praying and praying hard and keep God first."
"All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know."
Blogtober Day 7: Best/Worst Vacation.
Vacations are my favorite things ever. Mostly because they involve family, friends and usually wine. Honestly, I don't know what is my worst vacation, I don't think I have one. So instead of doing a best/worst, I'm doing my top 2 vacations.
Number 1: Arizona 2014. (a) It was my engagement party and (b) I became an aunt to the cutest little baby boy ever. Best vacation ever, ever, ever.
Number 2: Lake Tahoe with my fiancé, my parents and my future in-laws. What a great trip enjoying each other and celebrating becoming one family.

Day 6. 10 Things I told myself when I started blogging.
- Try and blog every day.
- Blog what is real and what is true, regardless of what is popular.
- Blog because I want too.
- Keep it interesting!
- Posts pictures... & not just of Henry.
- Don't blog when I'm mad or sad, because I'll probably regret it.
- Take risks.
- Stop blogging when I no longer enjoy it.
- Have fun!
- Stay true to myself.
