As readers of this blog know, it’s primarily about life, love, and the Paleo diet. You’ve probably heard about this diet over the last few years because it has become a popular eating option for many. Not for vegetarians or vegans, the Paleo diet takes its cues from ancient times, when men killed their meals with clubs and drug their wives by their hair. Here is some basic info about this diet.
Basic Premise // The basic premise behind the Paleo diet is to mirror the diet our hunter-gatherer ancestors, the Paleolithic humans, had centuries ago. Rather than eat processed foods from the grocery store, cave humans gathered their foods in the wild. As such, that food was primarily meat and fish, as well as plant sources of nutrition that were not touched by anything other than nature. The reason why people believe it’s healthy to eat this way is simple. Our ancestors didn’t suffer from illness or obesity.
Many believe you can lose a tremendous amount of weight on the Paleo diet, and in some respects, it is also similar to the Atkins diet. The primary source of energy is protein, and you avoid carbohydrates and sugars like the plague. For those who keep up with diet and health news, you’ve likely heard of Author Nina Teicholz. Although she does not call out the Paleo diet specifically, Nina Teicholz does believe that meat and dairy have received a bad rap over the years and they should still be part of a healthy diet.
What You Can’t Eat // The Paleo diet is restrictive, but this isn’t a bad thing when you look at the list of foods to avoid. Those on the Paleo diet refuse foods and drinks that contain high fructose corn syrup and/or sugar in them. This includes candy, fruit juice, ice cream, pastries, sodas, and table sugar among other items. You should also avoid grains on the Paleo diet, even whole grains, and don’t even think about eating beans, lentils, or other legumes. You can have low-fat dairy items, but you should never have full-fat dairy.
Paleo dieters also avoid bad fats. No corn, cottonseed, grape seed, safflower, soybean, or sunflower oils. No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats, including margarine and microwave popcorn among other processed foods. In fact, highly processed foods, especially those with the words “Diet” or “Low Fat” on the labels are a major no-no, as is artificial sweeteners, so it’s time to give up that diet soda habit. The bottom line is if the food is processed in a factory you shouldn’t eat it. Period.
What You Can Eat // So, what can you eat on the Paleo diet? A ton of yummy stuff, so don’t get discouraged just yet. If you are a meat eater, this diet is for you. As long as the meat is not processed, you can eat it, including beef, chicken, lamb, pork, and turkey. The Paleo diet also calls for a ton of healthy seafood, including wild-caught haddock, salmon, shellfish, shrimp, and trout among other options. You can enjoy eggs for breakfast, as these are a part of a healthy Paleo diet routine, just choose free-range ones.
Speaking of breakfast, you can enjoy an omelet and hash browns. Tuber vegetables, those are potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, and yams are allowed on the Paleo diet, as are veggies such as broccoli, carrots, kale, onions, peppers, and tomatoes. Fresh fruits are encouraged, including apples, avocados, bananas, berries, oranges, and pears, and make sure you enjoy plenty of nuts and seeds. You can cook everything in healthy oils, such as EVOO, and you can season with natural spices.
That’s it! Now you know what cannot and can eat on the Paleo diet. Good luck on your health and weight-loss goals.

Congrats, you are officially 9 days into the new year! For the sake of brutal honesty, this is when I start losing all New Years Resolution motivation. I really just want to lay in bed and eat pizza.
Yes, we are 9 days in to the new year and yes, I still haven't shared my resolutions with you yet. I'm so not blog trendy. I'm mixing up the way I do resolutions this year and I'm just not quite ready to share them. Don't you worry, you'll be the first to know them when I do (ps check back Wednesday!).
My friend posted this quote on Instagram and I love it: "And now let us welcome the new year - full of things that have never been." Rainer Maria Rilke. That's good shit right there, thank you Angie.
For a little insight, this quote includes one of my goals, new things for a new year. What about you? What are you working on for the new year? If you're like many out there, diet and exercise is top of the list. I know it's always been on mine.
One of my favorite ways to start the new year is to do 30 days of paleo. Yes, I eat paleo 80% of the time anyways, but most of the time, I allow myself cheat days on the weekends. I love starting the year with 30 very clean days. Even if no weight is lost, it's a great way to start feeling clean and fresh.
Starting clean is hard. On New Years Eve I was eating the most amazing charcuterie I've ever made and now I'm not even allowed to look at cheese. It's hard giving up food you love, but I promise it'll be worth it.
When I started eating paleo I turned to my friend and guru Callie for advice and support. My number one piece of advice when starting something like this is to know what you're doing and have support.
So you want to get started on a paleo diet huh? Well luckily for you, here are my top three tips:
Now, what to make? Here's what we're making this week --
Monday: Honey Glazed Sriracha Pork Tenderloin
Tuesday: Salmon with avocado salsa
Wednesday: Thai Chicken Salad
Thursday: Kale Mushroom Chicken Spaghetti Squash
Friday: Paleo Beef Enchiladas
Lunch: Chicken Salad (I make this Sunday and then pack for each day!)
Snacks: Paleo Chocolate Donuts
If you need more help, I've got more tips. Lifestyle changes can be hard! Be easy on yourself people!
Here's my top 10 tips to starting paleo. Good luck, you've got this!

Oh, and hey, side-note - - I am not a doctor. Major life/diet changes should probably be run by a doc before hand. Yes, it works for me, but before you do anything drastic, please make sure it's the best (and most healthy) option for you. But, having support is huge. Adam is my biggest support because he loves cooking and eating healthy with me too. It's important for me that he supports me in this because eating healthy is hard and it would be harder if while I'm eating grilled chicken, he's eating pizza. It's easier together.
So you want to get started on a paleo diet huh? Well luckily for you, here are my top three tips:
- Tip #1: Clean out your pantry and got rid of all processed stuff. Eating clean and cutting things out of your diet is hard enough, don't make it even harder by having pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream in the fridge.
- Tip #2: Make a long grocery list and be prepared to shop. Key to this diet is having great food on hand and a little bit of meal prep.
- Tip #3: Allow yourself to falter. If you go 100% all the time you will likely get burned out and hate it. Be easy on yourself. We all need a little grace.
In an effort to help ya out I made a grocery list for you! A great list of all things that are paleo and easy to have stocked in your fridge. Adam and my Sunday routine is to meal plan. We don't pre-make everything but we decide what we're going to make each day. We make a grocery list and off we go. Yes, sometime it sucks because what you picked for Wednesday's meal on Sunday doesn't sound good on Wednesday. Well, it's healthy and it'll save you money. Promise .
Here's my go-to grocery list. I know if I have these items in my fridge and pantry each week I am good to go.

It's hard to believe it's already January 4, 2016. That seems crazy to me. It seems like just yesterday I was decorating the Christmas tree and now I'm taking it down, packing up the decorations and prepping for 2016.
Adam and I made the decision WAY back in 2015 to start off 2016 on the right foot. Unless you are brand new around here, you know that Adam and I live/eat/love paleo. As most of you know our adherence to paleo is strict 80% of the time. We love our weekends and we love beer and wine.
Well to start 2016 off right, we decided that in January we would not cheat on the paleo diet. Adam is going to enjoy other food options on Saturday nights, but I'm going for it. Yep, you heard that correctly. That means no Wednesday night happy hour, no Sunday brunch (unless it's paleo), no Friday night pasta binges. Sober January (& eating clean) January has begun! #soberjanuary
Before you tell me that "I only live once" and "I need to live a little," I want to explain why. We're in the process of buying a house (keep your fingers crossed) and we (over) indulged during the holidays. It's time to tighten the buckle on our jeans and on our wallets. We figure by cooking at home all the time and only drinking Saturday night's we'll save money and pounds.
I thought that maybe...maybe some of you are in the same boat. Hey, it's January 4, we've made our resolutions and hopefully as of today, we're still sticking to them! I thought I would share my paleo shopping list and some links to some very easy and delicious recipes to get you started! Paleo is tricky to start, trust me, I was not all rainbows and sunshine when I started. But choosing paleo is as easy as a piece of (gluten-free) cake once you get the hang of it!
Tips on how to start eating and living paleo are what really helped me. My top 3 tips are:
Like I said in Tip #2 - make a grocery list. It's imperative. I promise it will help you so much. Our first trip to the grocery store was a total disaster. We started at Whole Foods, wandered around for over an hour, bought 6 things for $50 and then made our way to King Sooper. We were surprised that most of the stuff we needed was at our local grocery store and for half the price. Score.
Here's a simple beginner shopping list to get you started!
Now, to some of my favorite paleo recipes!

Cheers to love, health and happiness!

I've gotten a lot of questions about the paleo diet. Where do I begin? Can I eat beans? Can you seriously not eat cheese? What do you eat? Are you starving? I'll be honest, I was super skeptical before I started. I had no idea what the diet was about, what it included, excluded or what it really meant. I thought I would always be hungry! It wasn't until Callie began telling me about it, that I fully understood what paleo really meant. I probably wouldn't have ever started paleo if it wasn't for Callie helping me. So I want to help you! So here are my 10 tips for starting the paleo diet.
- Do some research. Read about it, look it up online, get a cookbook. This diet takes a lot of changes to your pantry, refrigerator and life so take some time before you jump in. You want to make sure what the paleo diet includes is right for your life, right now.
- Do what's best for you. The paleo diet excludes certain every day foods including granola, oats, quinoa, butter, ect. But if you can't go without granola in the morning, eat granola! Paleo is a diet that should be done 80% of the time, at 100%. Do what feels good to you!
- Plan your grocery list ahead of time, aka, meal plan. Paleo requires replacing certain items with new items. Say goodbye to your white flour and replace it with coconut flour and almond flour. Say goodbye to your skim milk, and look forward to delicious almond milk! It's fun, but it requires a long list of new, yummy items! Don't just wander the grocery store or else you will be there for years, wandering the aisles a little lost person.
- Buy a cookbook. This is my favorite, Practical Paleo. Pinterest is great for getting recipes, but sometimes its hard to have everything online. A book makes cooking so so easy. And its fun to page through all the pretty pictures.
- Don't be afraid to experiment. A lot of paleo recipes require an adventurous spirit. Cauliflower mashed potatoes might sound gross, but they're actually delish! Don't be afraid to try new things. Seasoning is a huge part of this diet and its so fun to mix different flavors. Sometimes yes, it might turn out bad, but sometimes you'll surprise yourself with something amazing! Have fun with it!
- Have a cheat day. You will burn out very fast if you never give yourself a cheat day. Trust me, you will miss pizza, pasta, cheese, chinese food (or maybe thats just me). Allow yourself to have a cheat day where you indulge! It will make going back to Paleo the next day feel even better!
- Remember it might be expensive, but it is worth it in the end. The initially shopping trip might leave you a little shocked. But I promise, once you buy the initial stuff it will get cheaper. Also, go to Costco! They sell huge jars of coconut oil & almond butter, cheap eggs and delicious medjool dates! It will save you money in the long run!
- Read labels. This
dietlifestyle will make you real labels more and understand what exactly you're eating. Have you ever read the label on Siracha? There are so many things in it that I've never actually heard of. It makes you much more aware. - Take it one day at a time. When I first started, I felt great. Then a week later, I got a little tired, a little bored of constantly cooking chicken and just wanted some french bread. A month+ later, I feel great and I'm in the swing of it. I still take it day by day and little by little I get more and more used to it.
- Paleo is a lifestyle. Get exercise, fresh air, go on walks, drink lots of water. I promise you will feel great! Since I've been eating paleo, exercising has never felt better for me. Make it a lifestyle and you will feel (and see) the rewards!
- Extra tip, Have fun! This is a fun and challenging change on the way you eat. Enjoy it! Adam and I have a blast looking up new recipes, trying new things and cooking together. I promise you won't regret eating paleo. You'll look great & feel great too!
