Guest Post: 5 Tips for How to Discover and Maintain a Healthy Life Balance

September 24, 2015

HappyThursday everyone! Today I am thrilled to introduce you to my new blogging friend, Carly from FitLiving. I started reading Carly's blog about 3 months ago and have been hooked. She shares how she manages a healthy lifestyle, delicious recipes and I find her blog inspiring and encouraging! I hope you all go check out her blog and enjoy this little treat from her today!
__________________________________________________________________________________________

Between work, family, social commitments, and everything in between, it can be hard to achieve the right balance in life to be able to do it all, and do it well. Want to know a secret? I don’t think there is a “perfect” balance that can be achieved. However, I do believe that there are proactive steps we can take to find a life balance that allows us to function at our best and find joy in life without compromising our health or our relationships. I have 5 tips for you below on how to find and maintain a healthy life balance!

Let me start by asking you two questions. Do you think finding balance in life is important? Chances are, you answered “yes”. Second question: Do you feel as if you have struck a balance to be able to live life at your best without feeling stressed and overwhelmed, and do you find joy in your everyday? You might be shaking your head “no” to this question and that’s okay! Many of us know that balance is important, but we are unsure of how to get there.

Finding balance will look different through various life stages and for each individual. This is true when you are single, married, working full time, have a family, or any other life stage you find yourself in. It’s important to be open to change through various circumstances and realizing that what works for you might not work for your neighbor, friend or even your significant other.

5 Tips for a Healthy Life Balance

Set your priorities. Knowing who you are and what is important to you is the first step towards finding a healthy life balance. It is easy to feel overwhelmed when all of our responsibilities are competing for that number one priority spot. When I start to feel like I have too much on my plate, it’s important to take a step back and realign my priorities.

For example, time with my husband every evening when we both get home from work is on the top of my list, but it’s easy for me to crowd our time with other menial tasks. I have to remind myself that my husband comes first and the cleaning, or the blog work, can wait.

Take time for yourself to be able to better care for others. As an introvert, time to myself is important to me, as it helps restore my energy and creativity. Unfortunately, it’s something that I just don’t get enough of. I’m not talking about time alone working behind my computer. I mean time where I can just be me, whether it’s going out for a girl’s night, watching some reality TV with my husband (don’t worry, he loves it, too), getting lost in a good book, or coming up with new recipes in the kitchen. For you, this might look like a hot bath, a trip to the grocery store without kids, or indulging in a pedicure.

Schedule your days to fit exercise in. I have read a lot of articles on the habits of successful people and the consistent message I find throughout is to schedule your workouts like you would any other appointment or meeting. For me, fitness is a big priority but also something that I can easily push to the side. To help myself stay on track, I look at the calendar on Sundays and schedule in my workouts for the week so that I can’t use the excuse “well, I didn’t have time” later. Short on time? Just get your body moving by going for a walk, doing a quick HIIT workout, or taking a fitness class with a friend (win-win!).

Related post: You have committed to making fitness a priority. Now what?

Focus on nutrition. Have you heard the phrase, “You are what you eat?” There is a lot of truth behind this simple phrase as I have found that focusing on whole, nutritious foods has increased my energy and overall health. One way that I ensure I maintain a healthy diet is to plan out my meals and go grocery shopping over the weekend. This helps me stay on course during the week, as I know I have all of the ingredients I need to whip up a simple, healthy dinner. I also make enough so that I can take leftovers for lunch most days to avoid the temptation of the nearest drive-thru or whatever junk food might be in the office break room.

Create boundaries regarding your technology. In a world where most things thrive on technology, it can be hard to step away from it sometimes. However, creating boundaries will help you spend better quality time with others and decrease the amount of stress in your life. For me, I try to leave work at work when I head home for the day, put my phone away when I’m on a date night with my husband, and shut off all technology at a specific time at night. Do I achieve these things all the time? No, of course not. But remembering that texts, emails and notifications can all wait until later takes the pressure off of feeling like I need to respond right away.

These tips will help get you started in finding a balance that works for you and your lifestyle. Start small by incorporating one of the tips above for a week and then add another. But here’s the reality – there are so many tips for finding a healthy life balance that I feel I have barely scratched the surface.

My mission through FitLiving is to educate and inspire others to become the best version of themselves by helping them navigate the busyness of life well. Recipe: Paleo Banana Bread

September 22, 2015

It's no secret that I am a bread lover. Being a bread lover while trying not to eat bread is really quite difficult. Luckily for me I found a super delicious recipe that is considered paleo. Hooray!

When I first made this recipe the entire loaf fell apart. When I made this the second time, it was about  inch thick and kind of mushy. When I made this recipe the third time, it was devoured in two days. I think it's safe to say I've semi mastered this one. I'm still trying to modify it, but I promise, this is so delicious.

Ingredients:
  • 2 medium bananas- mashed
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons coconut oil, melted
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour
  • 1/2 cup almond meal
  • 3/4 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
  • dark chocolate chips
How to Make:
  1. Preheat your oven to 340F.
  2. Line a small loaf tin with parchment paper and set aside.
  3. In a medium mixing bowl, mash your bananas and add in your honey, vanilla, melted butter/coconut oil, applesauce and eggs.
  4. Mix in your coconut flour, baking soda, baking powder and almond meal and allow to sit for two minutes. The mix will look really runny at first, but the coconut flour will soon absorb the liquid and form a thicker batter.
  5. Mix in the chocolate chips.
  6. Pour your banana bread mixture into your prepared loaf tin and bake for 40 minutes to an hour  or until your loaf is cooked through and a toothpick inserted into the middle removes clean.
tip: these are frozen bananas!

enjoy!

Let's make things interesting + a birthday celebration!

September 21, 2015

Since Everyday Grace is semi-new (again) and I still feel like I'm getting back into the swing of things, I thought I would continue to reintroduce myself to my new and old readers. One of my favorite things bloggers do is weird facts that help readers really get to know the girl behind the blogger.

But, before I start I just want to say thanks to everyone who's reached out and welcomed me back. It makes me feel so happy to know so many people read my blog. I love this space and I'm so glad so many of you do too. So thanks, you all know how to make a girl feel good.

As you read in the reintroduction of me, I'm a 28 year-old Denver dweller, wife, dog-mama & blogger finding my way through this life. But that's all the boring stuff about me, let's make this interesting.

10 facts about me that most people don't know. I did this awhile ago and it was so fun!
  1. Currently my favorite show on TV is Hard Knocks on HBO (I can watch re-runs right?) and every episode of Law and Order SVU. I mean what's better than a night spent with JJ Watt and Mariska Hargitay?
  2. I used to hate cold shrimp but recently it's all I want.I legitimately crave it.
  3. If I could be anything in the world I would be a professional singer. Preferably Mariah before her butterfly stage. Think one sweet day with Boys II Men
  4. I haven't missed a night of flossing in more than a year.
  5. I'm totally obsessed with the UFC.
  6. I sleep with my eyes partially open.
  7. I hate cake.
  8. I've never seen Armageddon but I know all the words to "I don't want to miss a thing"
  9. I get the hiccups every time I drink alcohol and aside from drinking probably about 5 times a week.
  10. I'm allergic to all types of melon.
What about you? What's something not everyone knows about you?

Wanna know one more thing about me? This is something most people know, but my dad is one of my favorite humans and TODAY is his birthday!! My dad is in Arizona celebrating his birthday today and while I can't be there in person, I'm always there in spirit.
Happy Birthday pops, I hope you have the best day. Thanks for being my role model, my friend, the one who walked me down the aisle and though life, the best teacher and the best dad in the world. I wouldn't be here today without your love and support. You've taught me how to be strong in the hard times and how to laugh in the good. That voice in my head telling me what's wrong and right is yours. I hope today you know and feel how loved you are. The world is a better place with you in it. I love you!

Recipe: Baked Steak Fajitas

September 16, 2015

Recently, the last thing I've wanted to do is cook. After a long day of work, physical therapy and everything else, cooking a paleo dinner is not at the top of my list. I've been trying to be diligent in meal planning for the week and picking meals that are easy to cook. But I still don't want too.

It's no secret that Adam and I have a thing for mexican food. On our cheat days, we always go for mexican, so I knew when I found baked fajitas I had really hit the jackpot.

I made this after a long weekend out of town filled with drinking and lots of indulging. This meal was easy, delicious and super filling. In this recipe, I made my own fajita seasoning which makes it a tad more complicated, so if you want it to be a little quicker grab one of those 36 cent packs of seasoning at the grocery store! For our finished product we added some diced tomatoes, sliced avocado and cholula (obvs). P.S. The leftovers are just as good, if not better! Enjoy everyone!

Ingredients:
Fajitas:
  • 2 small white onions
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 2 chicken breasts, sliced thin
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 lime
Seasoning:
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon coconut sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 tablespoon corn starch
How to Make:
  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Mix all of the seasoning ingredients and set aside.
  3. Cut the onions and bell pepper into small strips.
  4. Place the veggies and the sliced chicken in a large glass casserole dish.
  5. Sprinkle the mixed seasoning over the mix. Then sprinkle with 2 tablespoons oil and mix together. (Take those rings off ladies and use your hands!)
  6. Bake in oven for 40 minutes. 20 minutes and toss, 20 minutes and done! When it comes out of the oven, squeeze that lime all over it!
  7. Enjoy!
next time I'll probably add more bell peppers.
 mmm steak
 pre-oven
post-oven, look how tender and delicious that looks!
voila! enjoy!

Today is a huge day + a giveaway!

September 14, 2015

Today is a huge day for me. Today marks 6 weeks since knee surgery. It's crazy to think that I tore my ACL in February and I'm just now 6 weeks post surgery. This whole "knee" process has sucked, let's be real... but it has left room for some hilarity.

see #6

Yes, my knee brace is huge and very obvious, but you would be shocked at some of the comments I get. Mind you, 99.9% of these are from people I have never met before.  Are you ready for this?
  1. Wow, you must suck at skiing if that was the end result.
  2. You are way to young to have knee surgery.
  3. Can you drive?
  4. Oh, you had surgery on your ACL and meniscus? I've had surgery on both knees three times and they've repaired by ACL, MCL, PCL, both meniscus and they gave me a new brain implant.
  5. Did you do that on purpose?
  6. That would never happen to me because I was such a good skier at your age that I got asked to ski in the Olympics but I said no.
  7. How do you function?
  8. Your husband must be embarrassed to be seen with you. (Yes, someone actually said that)
  9. Can you do anything?
  10. How do you sleep/
  11. Are you ever gonna ski again? You better not ski again, that would be so stupid.
  12. You must not be very athletic.
  13. I hope you don't do anything and tear it again.

So yeah, I've gotten the slew of comments, but ya know what, today I am 6 weeks out and that is worth celebrating! Today marks the light at the end of the tunnel. 6 weeks post surgery, one month until bar results, one month and one week until the Taylor Swift concert, one month and two weeks until Michigan and then it's basically the holidays.

So to celebrate me, I'm going to celebrate you, all my readers. How about a giveaway? One thing that I love to splurge on for celebrations is Starbucks. I mean, it's fall, pumpkin spice lattes are here, who doesn't love starbucks. Enter below for your chance to win a $35 Starbucks gift card!

September 11 - 14 years later.

September 11, 2015

When I sat down to write this post I didn't know where to start. How did I want this post to be read. I'm still not really sure, so I'm just gonna write, so please excuse me if this feels over over the place, but when I think about September 11th, I feel all over the place.

I was so overcome with emotion when I thought about what writing a "September 11th" post meant to me. I starting thinking about how September 11th makes me feel, where I was back then, what was I doing and then it hit me, it has been 14 years since 9/11/01. Does anyone else feel like there is no way it can be that long ago?
Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children. - President George W. Bush
I've done a lot of 9/11 posts all in remembrance, but how do we remember without the facts of what happened? Here's a little history reminder and lesson.
Fourteen years ago, on the early morning of September 11, 2001, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four passenger airliners and redirected the course of history. Two of those places, American Airlines flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were flown into the north and south towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. 37 minutes later, American Airlines Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. At 10:07 a.m., United Flight 93 went down in a field in Pennsylvania. These attacks killed nearly 3,000 people.
For me, while it does seem far away, September 11, 2001 will always feel like it was just yesterday. I do remember where I was, what I was doing and how I felt. I remember the words George W. Bush said, the songs that were sung, the moments of silence, the prayers prayed and the half-mast flags. I remember how I cried and how I mourned for people I'd never met. I remember coming home from school, laying in bed watching the TV and crying. I was only 14.

As I sit here and think about 9/11, my heart feels like it weighs 1000 pounds. Tears are sitting in my eyes and my throat feels thick as I remember that day. I feel sad. But the thing that give me hope and the thing I write about every year is the hope I have.

America has been through it, as have her people. Americans fight with Americans, Americans kill other Americans. But on that day and every September 11 since 2001, Americans have come together. We forgot the bullshit (excuse my language) and we remember the common ground we all share. We love this country and we will fight for the freedom it allows each and every one of us. I promise to never forget the sacrifice and the lives given that day to protect others. I promise to always remember September 11, 2001.

Happy #TBT!

September 3, 2015

Happy Thursday everyone! I don't know about you, but this week has flown. I don't know about you, but I am so excited for the long weekend! Adam and I are venturing off to Wyoming tomorrow for a family wedding and I'm pumped to explore. I've never been to Wyoming before so if you have any good recommendations, please send them my way!

Today, I'm doing a mash up of throwback Thursday and a double weekend recap! My internet has been a little shotty and blogger was fantastic and deleted this post twice already. So, I'm starting again.

I have so much to catch you up on! Life has been super hectic, per usual, but with so much good, so let's get started!

First, as you are aware, my best friend/moh is engaged! ENGAGED. I am so so thrilled for her and Matt. A couple of weekends ago, Coti's sister threw her and Matt such a romantic engagement party in Arizona and it was so so fun. It was perfectly tailored to them, <sidenote: her sister should be a party planner!> Celebrating engagements is one of my favorite things, especially when the couple is my two best friends. It was so fun celebrating Matt and Coti for the night. Coti and Matt are such a gorgeous couple both inside and out. You can feel their love when you're around them and dedicating a night to them is just so wonderful. Below are some fabulous pictures from their party. This was such a great party, I cannot imagine nor wait for their wedding, it's going to be as wonderful as they are.
hi, how gorgeous are they.
 the three best friends.
ps. follow me on snapchat @kgrace01, look at that sweet filter!
THE couple, I mean.
Coti and Matt, Cheers to you two. I wish you all the happiness in the world, because you two deserve it the most. You have been through everything together and now it's time for you two to get married. Coti, I cannot wait to be your bridesmaid!! Matt, you are a lucky man. To you both, enjoy this time you two are so perfect together. I love you both!

Second, my nephew turned ONE. It seems like just yesterday he was born. Tomás is just the most beautiful little boy, so full of energy and happiness. He just loved zipping around in his little car, stuffing is face with cake and being held by everyone. He is such a joy, I'm so proud to be his aunt and godmom.
look at that little love.

Third, Adam and I went to the Broncos game! First (preseason) game of the year and it was so fun. Since I was born in Denver and now live here, I claim to be a die-hard, life-long Bronco's fan. I love the orange and blue.

I hope you all enjoyed this little inside look into the past couple weeks! It's been a busy couple weeks, but some of the best! Happy Thursday everyone, we're so close to the weekend!

Hello September.

September 1, 2015

August, you were okay. September, welcome, I am so excited for you.

August was a long month. Knee surgeries, exams, trips, you name it, August had it. I am so looking forward to September... hopefully life will slow down, cool down and I'll finally be out of my knee brace (victory!)!

Can you believe we only have 4 months left in 2015! It's almost time to start making new years resolutions. There are so many things I want to do and accomplish, but that's a big task. I'm going to start small and focus on September.

Last fall, I made fall bucket list and I loved it. It's a good way to start fresh in the middle of the year. So, in the spirit of it almost being fall, here is my September bucket list!
  1. Enjoy life's adventures. There are so many amazing things going on and I'm excited to have the time to enjoy every single one.
  2. Go to happy hours with my friends. It's finally cool enough outside that patio happy hours are back.
  3. Spend an evening with Helene from Helene in Between and her blog seminar! Helene is doing this amazing webinar to help people grow their blogs. Helene is basically like the queen of blogging and I'm excited to learn from here.
  4. Take my knee brace off! (t minus 2 weeks!) Trust me, this huge thing is hot and uncomfortable.
  5. Celebrate lot's of birthdays! There are SO many birthdays in September! My dad, my mother-in-law, Lyndsey, Weekley plus like 35 more people. I could literally celebrate a birthday every day in September.
  6. Spend a weekend in the mountains. Vail, Breckenridge, you name it, I want to be there.
  7. Drink fall beers. I am a sucker for Octoberfest beers. Any brand, I will drink it.
  8. Wear jeans again. (see #4) This knee brace has forced me to wear jean shorts and leggings. I am so ready for skinny jeans again! And boots. And scarves. Bring on the fall clothes.
  9. Watch football. Lot's of football. I just had my family fantasy football draft and I think this could be my year. It's time for the Paradise Valley Predators to bring home the trophy.
  10. I'm embarking on a new venture with a close friend of mine. I can't say much today, but I promise I'll let you in on the details soon!
  11. Multiple weddings & wedding anniversaries. September is obviously the month for love and babies (see #5).
  12. The thing I'm most excited for is to do nothing. I know this will change, but currently my September planner is pretty empty and I love that. It leaves room for so much possibility.
Happy September everyone, let's make it great.

Guest Post: Dainty Fleurish Co

August 31, 2015

When I took my hiatus, I really thought about what I wanted this space to look like. I knew I wanted my posts to mean something, and that might mean not posting every day, but it means posting something of value when I do. I thought about the posts I would write, the topics I would cover and then it hit me. I have been blessed to have a lot of friends and people close to me in a lot of different stages of life. Single ladies, married ladies, engaged ladies (men, too!), moms, doctors, nurses, you name it, I probably know someone doing a hell of a job at it.
So it dawned on me, why am I being so greedy with my friends?
Why am I not sharing how awesome they are with my readers?

This post comes from my friend Alexandra. She's a wife, a mother (wait until you see her daughter), a friend (mine!), a daughter, sister and a business woman. Ally and I have been friends since high school (which if your paying attention was 10+ years ago!). Ally has been working her butt off to start up her business and is doing such a good job. Her work is incredible. I used her for all my wedding day paper. She did my menus, my place cards, my programs and the chalkboard that was at the entrance to our ceremony. She's started a business doing all things calligraphy and I am so excited to share her with all of you plus some amazing picture of her work!

Tell us about YOU.  Who are you, what do you do?
Hi! My names is Alexandra and I am currently living in the wonderful city of Charleston, SC. I'm from Scottsdale, AZ and my heart will always and forever be there! I am a military wife and a stay-at-home mom to a sassy (almost) 2 year old, named Isla. For the last 4 years I had been working for my dad, who is a doctor, doing medical administration for his office. Having a creative background (theater and fashion design) this job (even with its great and steady paycheck) was not cutting it for me. Since I have a background in art and a love for it since I was in art classes with my grandmother at age 2, I decided to start making things for myself and friends and family.
Some of these things included my own wedding invitations, lettering envelopes for my best friends wedding, birth announcements and my daughters first birthday invites. I have always been interested in fonts (as nerdy as that sounds), lettering and calligraphy. I took some classes and fell absolutely in love with it. Combining that with the knowledge and love of water color, passed down from my grandmother, I came up with my little business of Dainty Fleurish Co.

Tell us about your business!
DaintyFleurish Co. is mostly handlettering and watercolor. I do everything from wedding invites and envelopes to handmade custom watercolor floral wreaths with monograms (which incidentally I just started making for all my engaged friends one day and it sort of just took off from there) Any thing having to do with lettering, you can count me in. Whether its chalkboards, lettering on glass, envelopes, invites or just a hand-made quote that you want to hang in your house, I love doing all of it.

Tell us how/why you got involved in this kind of business.
Being inundated with art since I was young is definitely part of why I started this. I wanted to carry on the wonderful talent that goes back at least 4 generations. I also wanted to start a business that wouldn’t feel like work. I have so much fun with each order I get, whether its researching the different kinds of flowers that someone wants in their custom water color wreath, or figuring out new writing styles for envelope addressing. Each and every order I get is different and I absolutely love that!
How long have you been doing this?
I have been doing calligraphy with pointed pen for about 8 months, but I have been hand lettering (which is using any other form of pen other than the traditional calligraphy pens and nibs) for about 5-6 years. Painting and illustration go back to when I was just a little tot and would sit in on my grandmothers art classes that she taught at the Phoenix Senior Center. My education in fashion design also helped a lot with lettering and sketching.

What are your goals for your business?
My goals would be to be able to do this business full time. I really love the idea of being one of the calligraphers featured in amazing magazines and blogs such as Real Weddings, Style Me Pretty and The Knot. I would love to have customers who keep coming back. From doing their wedding calligraphy, to art work for their home, to birth announcements. I just love the idea of being apart of someones life for all of the biggest occasions one goes through!

What’s the inspiration behind the name of your business?
The name Dainty Fleurish Co., is a bit of a play on words. I wanted to portray something sweet and simple which is how I see calligraphy, and that’s where the word “Dainty” comes from. “Fleurish” is a play on the words Fleur (which means flower in French and I wanted something to relate to the floral wreaths since they are a big part of the business) and Flourish which is what all the curly parts of a letter in calligraphy are called.
