Let's talk Paleo.

January 9, 2017

Congrats, you are officially 9 days into the new year! For the sake of brutal honesty, this is when I start losing all New Years Resolution motivation. I really just want to lay in bed and eat pizza.

Yes, we are 9 days in to the new year and yes, I still haven't shared my resolutions with you yet. I'm so not blog trendy. I'm mixing up the way I do resolutions this year and I'm just not quite ready to share them. Don't you worry, you'll be the first to know them when I do (ps check back Wednesday!).

My friend posted this quote on Instagram and I love it: "And now let us welcome the new year - full of things that have never been." Rainer Maria Rilke. That's good shit right there, thank you Angie.

For a little insight, this quote includes one of my goals, new things for a new year. What about you? What are you working on for the new year? If you're like many out there, diet and exercise is top of the list. I know it's always been on mine.

One of my favorite ways to start the new year is to do 30 days of paleo. Yes, I eat paleo 80% of the time anyways, but most of the time, I allow myself cheat days on the weekends. I love starting the year with 30 very clean days. Even if no weight is lost, it's a great way to start feeling clean and fresh.

Starting clean is hard. On New Years Eve I was eating the most amazing charcuterie I've ever made and now I'm not even allowed to look at cheese. It's hard giving up food you love, but I promise it'll be worth it.

When I started eating paleo I turned to my friend and guru Callie for advice and support. My number one piece of advice when starting something like this is to know what you're doing and have support.
Oh, and hey, side-note - - I am not a doctor. Major life/diet changes should probably be run by a doc before hand. Yes, it works for me, but before you do anything drastic, please make sure it's the best (and most healthy) option for you.
But, having support is huge. Adam is my biggest support because he loves cooking and eating healthy with me too. It's important for me that he supports me in this because eating healthy is hard and it would be harder if while I'm eating grilled chicken, he's eating pizza. It's easier together.

So you want to get started on a paleo diet huh? Well luckily for you, here are my top three tips:
  • Tip #1: Clean out your pantry and got rid of all processed stuff. Eating clean and cutting things out of your diet is hard enough, don't make it even harder by having pints of mint chocolate chip ice cream in the fridge.
  • Tip #2: Make a long grocery list and be prepared to shop. Key to this diet is having great food on hand and a little bit of meal prep.
  • Tip #3: Allow yourself to falter. If you go 100% all the time you will likely get burned out and hate it. Be easy on yourself. We all need a little grace.
In an effort to help ya out I made a grocery list for you! A great list of all things that are paleo and easy to have stocked in your fridge. Adam and my Sunday routine is to meal plan. We don't pre-make everything but we decide what we're going to make each day. We make a grocery list and off we go. Yes, sometime it sucks because what you picked for Wednesday's meal on Sunday doesn't sound good on Wednesday. Well, it's healthy and it'll save you money. Promise .

Here's my go-to grocery list. I know if I have these items in my fridge and pantry each week I am good to go.

Now, what to make? Here's what we're making this week --

Monday: Honey Glazed Sriracha Pork Tenderloin
Tuesday: Salmon with avocado salsa
Wednesday: Thai Chicken Salad
Thursday:  Kale Mushroom Chicken Spaghetti Squash
Friday: Paleo Beef Enchiladas
Lunch: Chicken Salad (I make this Sunday and then pack for each day!)
Snacks: Paleo Chocolate Donuts

If you need more help, I've got more tips. Lifestyle changes can be hard! Be easy on yourself people!

Here's my top 10 tips to starting paleo. Good luck, you've got this!

  4. Love this post! Such practical reminders for every day. I recently cleaned out my pantry. We accumulate so much food that we really don't need or would ever eat. This is the perfect time of year to refocus and get a fresh start!
